BIRD SURVEYS

Bird surveys at Los Peñasquitos Lagoon and within the rest of the Torrey Pines State Natural State Reserve are conducted monthly by the Torrey Pines Docents. Results from these surveys can be found online, dating back to 2005. Results from these surveys are also submitted to an online to eBird, an online data base and network hub for the birding community established by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Additional bird surveys are conducted at Los Peñasquitos Lagoon and its adjacent areas for listed bird species that include the western snowy plover (federally endangered), Ridgeway’s rail (federally listed), and Belding’s savannah sparrow (state endangered). These surveys are typically conducted on behalf of the United State Fish & Wildlife Service, California State Parks, and California Fish & Wildlife Department with results posted online.
